Test Social Project
Cross Country was founded in 1988 by Sherry Thevenot, a Californian who’d moved to Dijon, France. Flying in Europe and travelling the world as an FAI official, Sherry felt that an international forum was needed for pilots to stay in touch with the latest happenings in the global flying community.

Cross Country quickly developed a reputation as a passionate magazine, connected with the world of competition and development. And with colour printing and the desktop publishing revolution of the early 1990s came the ability to broadcast a wealth of superb photographs to the flying world.

In 1997 Sherry met Hugh Miller at the World Air Games in Turkey, and quickly sussed that he was a budding journalist. Sherry lured Hugh to France and before he’d had time to think what he was letting himself in for, Sherry had announced Hugh’s editorship to the flying world.

Hugh moved offices to Bar-sur-Loup in France, and relaunched the magazine with a complete overhaul of Cross Country’s design completed by Swedish pilot Nic Hervy.

Nic and Hugh continued to produce the magazine until 2000, when Hugh moved back to the UK. Nic continues as the online editor.

Cross Country is now based in the south Downs, England. Our local flying sites of Firle and Devil’s Dyke can serve up 100 km XCs on the rare good days, or when the print deadline looms Hugh can often be seen spiralling down to the office after a quick 20 km race from Devil’s Dyke. Ian Blackmore joined as the new editor in 2002, and a new editorial team is now in place to take Cross Country forward through 2005 in the form of renowned adventure pilot Bob Drury and his righthand man Marcus King.

Cross Country is published in English, with Polish and Japanese licensed editions, and continues to strive to be the world’s leading international hang gliding and paragliding magazine.

Cross Country also publishes books, calendars and DVDs for the free flying community. Our most proud accomplishment yet has been Stolen Moments, the beautiful hardback photography book featuring the work of Jerome Maupoint. We’re also stoked to be working with Sean White to distribute his inspirational film, Never Ending Thermal, and also Bruce Goldsmith with Instability 2 and Jocky Sanderson’s Speed to Fly/Security in Flight production.
